On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey. The hydrogen-filled airship burned completely within seconds and fell to the ground. The photograph shows the burning hull in the phase of descent—the critical moment of the disaster, captured by several newsreel cameras. 36 of the 97 people aboard perished; the accident ended the era of commercial passenger airship travel.
