On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its landing maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely within seconds. The still image documents the moment of the burning airship’s descent and impact on the ground – the decisive phase of the disaster in which 36 of the 97 people on board lost their lives. The footage from multiple newsreel camera teams, including Pathé, Paramount, Universal, and Movietone, ranks among the best-known film documents in the history of aviation. The accident sealed the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
