On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned out completely in less than a minute. The still image documents the phase of burning descent — that moment in which the disaster had already occurred and the ship could no longer be saved. Of 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The event, recorded by several newsreel teams, is considered the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
