On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during the landing maneuver at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey. The hydrogen-filled airship burned completely within approximately half a minute and sank to the ground. Of 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. Footage from several newsreel camera teams documented the course of events and made the disaster one of the most photographed aviation accidents in history.
