On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver at the naval station Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned out within seconds. This photograph shows the immediate phase of descent: the structure of the airship has already collapsed and is coming to rest on the ground, while members of the ground crew retreat. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives; the event is regarded as the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
