Immediately after the Hindenburg caught fire on May 6, 1937, rescue forces and ground crews rushed to the wreckage on the grounds of Naval Air Station Lakehurst. The airship LZ 129 had caught fire during the mooring maneuver and burned completely within minutes. The rescue phase began while the wreckage was still glowing; 36 of the 97 people on board did not survive the disaster.
