The shot of the clock tower at the Palace of Westminster was taken in May 1944 and belongs to the opening sequence of Jack Lieb’s color film, which presents London as the point of departure for the Allied invasion. London was at that time a hub for thousands of Allied soldiers and war correspondents preparing for the impending attack on the Normandy coast. In the film, the tower served as a geographical and symbolic point of reference: Britain as a staging area for Operation Overlord, which was to begin just a few weeks later, on 6 June 1944.
