In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. As Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economics, Ludwig Erhard was among the German officials accompanying the President during the multi-day trip. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and was regarded as an important signal of transatlantic solidarity, two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall.
