During the state visit of U.S. President John F. Kennedy to the Federal Republic of Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, this photograph shows Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economics Ludwig Erhard being welcomed by the population. Kennedy was accompanied on his visit to Germany by leading politicians of the Federal Government, including Erhard as the second-highest representative of the state. The enthusiastic reception by the population reflected the close transatlantic bond of the Federal Republic during the years of the Cold War.
