In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economics Ludwig Erhard was among the German companions on the trip. The population received the delegation with extraordinary enthusiasm; numerous photographs document jubilant crowds along the routes of travel. The visit took place under the shadow of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961.
