The officially documented meeting of US and Soviet forces on 27 April 1945 at Torgau on the Elbe marked the linkup of the Western and Eastern Fronts and split the remaining German forces into two separate operational areas. Major General Emil F. Reinhardt of the US 69th Infantry Division and Major General Vladimir Rusakov of the Soviet 58th Guards Rifle Division posed for the cameras of the Allied press services. The historic encounter of US and Red Army forces at the Elbe became known as “Elbe Day” and was broadcast worldwide as a symbol of the war’s imminent end.
