The photograph was taken during the preparation phase before D-Day in spring 1944, when Jack Lieb was traveling in southern England. It shows civilian everyday life in an English town, which at the same time is embedded in the war context through a ‘War Savings Centre’ – a state institution for war financing through loans. Such market scenes are part of Lieb’s documentary recordings of the British hinterland, before he crossed to Normandy with the Allied forces.
