In the summer of 1944, cameraman Jack Lieb visited Mont-Saint-Michel in the Normandy hinterland. The Hôtel Poulard – known for its traditional omelets – had been a firmly established institution on the monastery hill since the late 19th century and remained a well-known destination even during German occupation. Lieb’s footage of the house sign documents a brief glimpse of civilian life beyond the combat zone, which in his lecture film forms a quiet counterpoint to the immediate military action.
