In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy traveled throughout the Federal Republic of Germany. The vehicle convoys through the city centers were accompanied by mounted police and drew large crowds. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961, and was regarded as an important signal of American solidarity with the Federal Republic of Germany.
