In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy traveled to the Federal Republic of Germany for a state visit. The photograph shows a scene from a motorcade in which Kennedy and his entourage briefly stopped alongside the vehicle while a mounted police escort secured the convoy. Such motorcades attracted hundreds of thousands of spectators in several German cities. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961.
