In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy traveled through the Federal Republic of Germany; the journey took him to Cologne, Bonn, Frankfurt am Main, and West Berlin, among other places. The photograph shows the motorcade with the standing President in an open car, accompanied by mounted escort and dense crowds. Kennedy’s visit took place in the context of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall erected in 1961; the West German population received him with extraordinary enthusiasm.
