In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited Germany; the first stop was Cologne on June 23. The motorcade at Cologne Cathedral was among the first public appearances of the trip. American and German flags lined the route; tens of thousands of people gathered along the route of the journey. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and was intended to underscore the solidarity of the United States with the Federal Republic of Germany.
