In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. The image shows the motorcade in front of Cologne Cathedral, the distinctive Gothic structure on the Rhine, which Kennedy’s convoy passed on June 23, 1963. Numerous American flags line the route; motorcycle police and dense crowds accompany the procession. Cologne was the first stop of the four-day trip, which subsequently took Kennedy to Bonn, Frankfurt, and West Berlin.
