The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was the most important fighter-bomber and ground-attack aircraft of the USAAF in Western Europe. Following the landing in Normandy in June 1944, P-47 units operated from advanced field airfields and supported the Allied advance with dive attacks on supply routes, bridges, and troop concentrations. The photograph belongs to the phase of the Normandy campaign in which Jack Lieb documented Allied operations behind the invasion front.
