The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the most important fighter and fighter-bomber types of the United States Army Air Forces in the Western campaign of 1944. Following the landing in Normandy, temporary airfields (Advanced Landing Grounds) were rapidly established behind the front lines, from which P-47 units provided tactical air support to ground forces and attacked enemy supply routes. In the course of Lieb’s film, this photograph falls within the phase of the advance through the Normandy hinterland, in which Allied air forces played a decisive role in breaking German defenses.
