The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was the most widely produced American fighter aircraft of the Second World War and played a central role on the Western Front. Following the landing in Normandy in June 1944, provisional airfields were established behind the front lines, from which P-47 units supported Allied ground forces through low-level attacks on German troops, supply lines, and infrastructure. Jack Lieb documented this scene as part of his color film material, which captures the Allied advance from Normandy to Germany.
