The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was the most widely deployed tactical fighter aircraft of the USAAF in Normandy after D-Day. Operating from provisional airfields behind the invasion front, it flew ground-attack missions against German supply lines, troop concentrations, and armored forces, thereby supporting the Allied advance through France. The invasion stripes—broad white and black bands on fuselage and wings—served for friend-foe identification and were applied to all Allied front-line aircraft shortly before June 6, 1944. Jack Lieb’s color footage documents the ongoing air war behind Utah Beach during a phase in which stationary airfields enabled the rapid advance of Allied forces logistically.
