The photograph was taken in August 1944 in Paris, a few days after the liberation of the city by Allied and French forces (25 August 1944). In addition to military events, Jack Lieb documented scenes of everyday Parisian life that made visible the transition from German occupation to the restoration of civilian life. A street painter at work on a painting of a Parisian street stands as representative of the city’s cultural life, which began to renew itself immediately after the end of the war.
