In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. Among the military program items were troop inspections of U.S. armed forces stationed in Germany, which served as a visible sign of American security commitment during the Cold War. The U.S. troops stationed in Germany formed a central pillar of NATO defense against the Warsaw Pact.
