During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, President John F. Kennedy also inspected units of U.S. armed forces stationed in the Federal Republic. American military presence in Germany was a central element of NATO’s defense strategy during the Cold War and a visible symbol of the U.S. security guarantee for West Germany. Kennedy’s visit to the soldiers underscored American military resolve to defend its allies against Soviet pressure.
