In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The photograph shows a greeting scene at an airport, as occurred at several stations of the journey. The visit took place under the shadow of the Cold War and served to reaffirm American solidarity with the Federal Republic and the isolated West Berlin. Kennedy’s stay left a strong impression on the German population.
