In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The photograph shows Kennedy in a group of companions; the chain of office worn by a gentleman on the right indicates a municipal officeholder. The visit was a central event during the Cold War and served to reaffirm the German-American partnership as well as solidarity with West Berlin, the city divided by the construction of the Wall in 1961.
