During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, his public appearances generated extraordinary enthusiasm among the population. The photograph shows a female spectator among a crowd following the visit. Kennedy’s reception in the Federal Republic and in West Berlin was considered one of the most enthusiastic that a foreign head of state had ever experienced there. In the context of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall, the visit was for many Germans a powerful symbol of Western solidarity.
