U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963. The photograph shows him in the midst of a crowd of people, secured by police and security personnel. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall erected in 1961, and served to reaffirm the German-American partnership. Throughout Germany, the population received Kennedy with great enthusiasm.
