During US President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, jubilant crowds lined the streets and squares in many places. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961, and it sparked extraordinary enthusiasm among the West German population. The photograph shows a spectator in the midst of the crowd – a typical image of the emotional participation that accompanied Kennedy’s appearances in the Federal Republic.
