In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The photograph shows a reception ceremony on an airport apron, in which military personnel salute and civilian and military dignitaries greet the arriving guest. Such ceremonial receptions accompanied the various stops of the visit, which in the context of the Cold War was regarded as a strong signal of Western solidarity with the Federal Republic and West Berlin.
