In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy traveled to the Federal Republic of Germany for a multi-day state visit. The photograph shows the arrival at an airport: persons disembarking from a U.S. Air Force aircraft, with a reception committee assembled on the tarmac. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and served to reaffirm the transatlantic partnership as well as the American security guarantee for West Germany and West Berlin.
