In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. At official reception ceremonies, leading German politicians appeared together to underscore the close alliance between the United States and the Federal Republic in the context of the Cold War. The visit was regarded as a strong signal of Western solidarity, particularly toward the divided city of West Berlin following the construction of the Wall in 1961.
