In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy traveled through the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and served to reaffirm the American commitment to the security of West Germany and West Berlin. Kennedy delivered several public addresses during the trip; the most famous was the speech on June 26, 1963 before the Schöneberg Town Hall in Berlin. The visit held great symbolic significance for the West German population, who received Kennedy with considerable enthusiasm.
