In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy traveled through the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961. Kennedy delivered public speeches at several stops, including in Frankfurt (St. Paul’s Church) and in front of the Schöneberg Town Hall in West Berlin. The photograph shows Kennedy at a lectern, identifiable by the national flags in the background.
