In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. At several stops along the journey, large crowds received him at public rallies. The densely packed crowds as well as the numerous American and German flags reflect broad public participation. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and served to reaffirm the transatlantic partnership.
