In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. The photograph shows a mass rally in the open air, where American and German flags wave together — a visible sign of the German-American alliance during the Cold War. The existing caption refers to accompaniment by Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. Kennedy’s visit to Germany (June 23–26, 1963) met with extraordinarily large public response everywhere.
