During Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets and welcomed the U.S. President with great enthusiasm. The photograph shows the spontaneous participation of the population, who expressed their jubilation with American flags. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961 and was regarded as a strong symbol of solidarity between the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany.
