During the state visit of U.S. President John F. Kennedy to the Federal Republic of Germany (June 23–26, 1963), Chancellor Konrad Adenauer appeared publicly as a speaker. Adenauer was one of the central German hosts of the visit, which took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the wall in 1961. The visit served to reaffirm the transatlantic alliance and American solidarity with the Federal Republic.
