Speakers Corner in Hyde Park had been a traditional venue for public speaking since the nineteenth century and remained part of London’s everyday life during the Second World War. Jack Lieb filmed this scene in May 1944 as part of his footage from the British capital, which forms the opening of his film “D-Day to Germany.” The material was shot a few weeks before the Normandy landing, when London served as the departure point and staging area for the forthcoming Allied invasion. Lieb’s color camera also captured the civilian and religious life of the city, which continued despite the war.
