This photograph was taken in autumn 1944 in the area of the Westwall, the German fortification line along the western border of the Reich. In the foreground, characteristic concrete obstacles (dragon’s teeth) are visible as anti-tank barriers, which formed part of the core system of the Westwall. After the breakthrough through northern France and Belgium, Allied forces encountered these defensive installations from autumn 1944 onward, whose reduction at Aachen and elsewhere required considerable fighting. Lieb’s color footage documents the advance of U.S. forces during this phase of the Western campaign.
