Aachen was the first major German city taken by Allied troops in October 1944. After fierce street fighting between US forces and the Wehrmacht, large parts of the city center lay in ruins. Jack Lieb captured the condition of the city in rare color footage documenting the section of his film covering the advance from Normandy into Germany. The visible sign for a public telephone points to the civilian infrastructure that the battle for the city had largely destroyed.
