Aachen was in October 1944 the first major German city to be captured by Allied troops – primarily the US 1st Army. After weeks of fighting and preceding air raids, the city center had been largely reduced to rubble. The photograph documents the extent of the destruction and stands in Lieb’s film for the phase of the advance into German territory following the liberation of France.
