Aachen was the first major German city to be captured by Allied troops in October 1944. The Rothe Erde district with its freight rail yard lay in the eastern part of the city and was part of the heavily contested approach routes. Jack Lieb captured the city in rare color footage as US units advanced into the ruins after weeks of fighting. The footage is part of the film section documenting the advance from France into German territory.
