This photograph was taken during Operation Overlord at Utah Beach, the westernmost of the five Allied landing sectors in Normandy. Utah Beach was the sector assigned to the U.S. 4th Infantry Division; Jack Lieb came ashore here together with elements of the 82nd Airborne Division. In the days following June 6, 1944, the beach served as a central transshipment point for troops, vehicles, and supplies while fighting continued in the hinterland. Lieb’s color footage of this scene represents a rare exception in an event otherwise documented almost exclusively in black and white.
