This still image comes from Jack Lieb’s color footage of the landing phase in Normandy (D-Day, June 6, 1944). Lieb arrived at Utah Beach as an embedded cameraman for the Hearst newsreel with a sea-based element of the 82nd Airborne Division. In the background, destroyed vehicles and equipment can be seen on the beach—evidence of the intense fighting in the area of the Atlantic Wall. Lieb’s 16-mm Kodachrome footage represents one of the few color records of the invasion, which is otherwise documented almost exclusively in black and white.
