The photograph belongs to the landing phase at Utah Beach in Normandy, where Jack Lieb went ashore with a seaborne element of the 82nd Airborne Division. Barrage balloons over the beach served to protect against low-flying German attacks on the densely occupied landing zones. The heavy vehicle and boat traffic shows the ongoing buildup of the Allied beachhead in the days following June 6, 1944. Lieb’s 16-mm Kodachrome footage is among the few color documentations of this section of the landing operation.
