This photograph is part of the landing sequence in Lieb’s film and shows the moment of the advance from the water onto the beach – a phase that is otherwise documented almost exclusively in black and white. Utah Beach was the westernmost of the Allied landing sectors on D-Day (June 6, 1944); Lieb came ashore there together with a sea-based element of the 82nd Airborne Division. In the background, parts of the massive Allied invasion fleet that secured supplies are visible. Lieb’s color material represents a rare exception within the otherwise black-and-white photographic documentation of the Normandy landing.
