On June 6, 1944, Allied forces landed at several sections of the Normandy coast as part of Operation Overlord. In addition to the American beaches Utah and Omaha, British and Canadian units were deployed at Gold, Juno, and Sword Beach. The sequence shows the moment of landing from a landing craft—one of the most dramatic phases of the westward advance, in which soldiers under fire had to cross the open approaches of the Atlantic Wall. Jack Lieb documented the landing operations in his work for the Hearst newsreel; this excerpt comes from the black-and-white material that was shot in parallel with his private Kodachrome color film.
