On June 6, 1944, Allied landing craft deposited troops at several beach sectors in Normandy. The still image shows one of these moments at the water’s edge, captured by newsreel cameraman Jack Lieb with his private 16-mm Kodachrome camera. While D-Day was otherwise documented almost exclusively in black and white, Lieb’s color material ranks among the rare contemporary color records of the landing operations. The footage appears in the film during the early phase of the Normandy sequence, immediately after the crossing of the English Channel.
